So your dearly beloved vehicle has seen better days, and it’s time to start looking at a replacement. Auto insurance is one the factors you need to consider. You’ve had your eye on a cute little red car parked in a nearby car dealer’s lot. Your research on this little red beauty shows it’s a good deal, meets safety standards and is a car you can afford, so you’re ready to buy.

But a couple of things still nag at you because it’s a RED car. Are these myths or facts?

  • Are my insurance rates going to be higher if I purchase a red car?

Insurance carriers do not include the vehicle’s color as one of the items they look at when determining your insurance rates. Some of the things insurance carriers look at include the make, model, year and safety record of the vehicle as well as your personal driving record. The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) doesn’t have a color associated with it. Color is not a factor in determining insurance rates, but your driving history is!
  • Do red cars get more tickets?

A few studies have actually been done to determine if red vehicles are in more crashes or if the drivers get ticketed more often. According to
Snopes.com, the claim that red cars are ticketed more often than other color cars is FALSE!  There are several reasons it’s assumed red cars get more tickets. One of them is because red is a popular color for sports cars, whose drivers tend to go faster. Plus, red cars are eye-catching and may appear to be going faster than they really are.
  • Are red cars in more accidents?

    Regarding crashes, an interesting
study done in Australia by Monash University, revealed that during daylight, black vehicles are 12 percent more likely than white cars to be involved in an accident. Not only are cars with low-visibility colors more likely to be involved in any crash, they are also more likely to be in a severe or life-threatening accident. Other low-visibility colors include blue, silver, gray, red and dark green. White cars are the safest cars to drive due to their high visibility during daylight and at dusk and dawn. Driving with your lights on during the day is the best way to increase your vehicle’s visibility.

So go ahead and buy that red car – you know you want to.  Your insurance rates won’t be any higher than if you bought the same vehicle in another color. Remember good driving habits will keep your insurance rates down as well as reduce your chances of getting a ticket; and turn on your daytime driving lights.
